Managing Your Child’s Eye Development

A lot of your child’s development relies on their vision. Some studies suggest that 80% of your child’s learning happens visually! If they have an undiagnosed issue, your child can develop learning difficulties at school or even have trouble playing sports with friends.

Regular eye exams can help detect and address these problems, helping your child enjoy their vision with clarity, comfort, and confidence.

Signs of A Vision Problem

It may be difficult to tell if your child has a vision problem. They also might be unaware that they are developing a problem!

However, there are some behavioural signs you could look for that may indicate a vision problem. Some of the most common include:

  • Frequent headaches
  • Head tilting
  • Frequent eye rubbing
  • Short attention spans
  • Reading difficulties
  • Sitting close to screens
  • Sitting at the front of class
  • Complaints about discomfort

If your child shows these symptoms, it might be time to book an eye exam.

Myopia: The Most Common Vision Problem

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is the most common vision error children develop.

It affects their distance vision, a skill they use to learn and play.

How It Develops

Myopia can develop in school-aged children and progress into adulthood. It occurs when the eye grows too long or if the cornea becomes too steep.

There are a variety of strategies we can offer to control the progression of myopia. Please visit our Myopia Control page for more information!

Why Are Your Child’s Eyes Misaligned?

Many children may develop lazy eye or crossed eyes early in their life, and we can help address these issues when your child comes in for an eye exam.

Amblyopia

Amblyopia, also known as lazy eye, can develop if your child has an uneven refractive error in both eyes.

If left untreated, the brain can ignore images in the weaker eye, leading to vision loss.

Strabismus, also known as crossed eyes, can occur if your child has underdeveloped eye muscles. Like amblyopia, strabismus could cause vision loss in the weaker eye if the issue isn’t addressed.
